TMJ and Exercise: What Works Best For You

Having a TMJ disorder can be very bothersome. It affects one’s productivity and robs a person of a happy life. Of course, human instinct dictates that one is always on the lookout for a cure of this disorder.

Well, the good news is that we can beat this condition without even need of a medication. There are natural ways to fight this common ailment and they’re all proven safe and effective.

Since time immemorial, exercise has been regarded as an activity loaded with lots of benefits. No wonder, more and more people are getting involved with this activity. Exercise has also been regarded as a cure for many diseases including TMJ disorder.

Since TMJ generally affects the jaw, it is important that you should focus your exercise on this area. Simply put your tongue on your palate and keep your mouth wide open. Slowly breathe in and out for two counts and relax your tongue.

Repeat the exercise for ten times. Following this exercise regimen will remove the tightness in your jaw that can eventually develop into TMJ if not promptly corrected.

Another exercise that you should really try out is to open and close your mouth and move your jaw from side to side. This helps strengthen your jaw if done for at least five minutes five times a day.

You can even do this exercise using your hand but do it as slowly as you can. Putting warm moist muscles on both sides of your face will also bring about increased blood flow.

Relaxing your TMJ is also important. How do you do this? Simply put your fist under your chin. Have your chin pressed slowly on your fist and gently try to open your jaw.

On one hand, you can also press your fist against the right side of your jaw just below the ear. Put consistent pressure on the jaw and hold this position for ten seconds. You can do the same on the left side of the jaw as well.

A neck stretch is also helpful in so far as TMJ disorder is concerned. Simply touch ear to shoulder by bending your neck. Be careful because raising your shoulder will not do the trick.

As much as possible, always maintain a good posture while standing or sitting down. Did you know that proper posture is very beneficial to the temporomandibular joint? Always sit straight on your back, breathe slowly and deeply.
